The Growth of Levelland Through Booms & Busts
Humble Beginnings
The Levelland area was first settled in the 1800s, but the town wasn’t officially established until 1912 by C.W. Post, the founder of Post Cereal. Mr. Post originally named the town Hockley City, which was changed to Levelland in 1922 because of how flat the area was. Afterward, the town began to grow rapidly. The first store and house were built in 1921, the first church in 1923, and the first newspaper was started in 1924.
Levelland Oil Boom
The population leveled out following the Great Depression until the county experienced an oil boom in the 1950s when the first refinery was built. By then, the population was over 8,000, which resulted in the addition of the first library and the first municipal park being built in the town. South Plains College was also built during the ‘50s in response to the oil boom. The success of industries such as agribusiness, petroleum processing, and oilfield equipment manufacturing helped Levelland become the commercial center of the county throughout the 1980s.
Continued Growth
The town of Levelland only continues to grow and attract new residents today. South Plains College is a major attraction to the area with almost 10,000 students enrolled as of 2010.
