As a student driver, you must learn to recognize a wide variety of road directional signals. While you know what stop or speed limit signs mean, other displays might be unfamiliar. The following guide outlines some common signs you might see when you're behind the wheel so you will know how to respond.

What Are Some Road Signs New Drivers Should Know?

1. Slippery When Wet

A diamond-shaped sign that displays a car with S-shaped lines indicates a skidding vehicle. The sign means slippery conditions exist on the road ahead, such as ice- or rain-covered surfaces. Slow your speed carefully, and do not hit the brakes hard or make sudden lane changes or turns. Leave more space than usual between your vehicle and other motorists in front of you.

2. Sharp Curve to the Left or Right

Before you reach a sharp curve, you may see a yellow rectangular sign with a black arrow inside it. The arrow will point toward the curve, meaning the direction of the upcoming road is changing sharply. These sections of roadway are often accompanied by speed limit changes, so keep your eyes peeled for these signs, as well. Slow your vehicle gradually before getting to the curve to stay safe.

3. Deer Crossing

A yellow diamond-shaped sign with a black shape of a deer means that deer frequently cross the road or highway in this area. These signs are meant to urge drivers to slow down. You should also turn your lights on if you're traveling during dawn or dusk since this can help you track deer movement more accurately in low light. Look for the flick of their white tails.

These animals are approximately 3 or 4 feet tall, and they can weigh anywhere from 100 to 150 pounds. As a result, they can do serious damage to vehicles in collisions. Deer encounters are frequent in Ohio, especially between 6 p.m. and midnight during March and April. Deer are also quite active between October and December, as this is mating season.
