After a long day of work, many people look forward to unwinding with friends at happy hour. Restaurants encourage this jovial tradition by offering discounted cocktails, beers, and snacks. But, have you ever wondered how it began? Learn the history behind the ritual below.

What Is the History of Happy Hours?

The term happy hour can be traced back to around the 1920s. American Navy sailors used the term to refer to their allocated entertainment time, which was meant to alleviate the monotony of life at sea. During happy hour, sailors listened to live music and spent time unwinding from the day with others.

At the same time, Prohibition was underway on the mainland. From 1920 to 1933, the manufacturing, transport, and sale of most alcoholic beverages were prohibited. However, this didn’t stop Americans from gathering secretly in homes and at speakeasies to consume alcohol. Civilians adopted the term happy hour as a euphemism for those illicit festivities. Happy hours became a part of American slang. They were soon adopted by restaurants and bars to describe food and drink specials.

How Is It Celebrated Worldwide?

Different cultures have different ways of celebrating happy hour. In Ireland, it's common for one person to go to the bar and buy a round of drinks for everyone with the assumption that everyone in the group will return the favor. This is also common in England.

In Korea, it’s common to enjoy happy hour at a beloved karaoke bar. Participants will sing as they sip. Also, it's polite to receive and pour drinks with both hands in Korean culture.

In Turkey, coworkers and friends go out and enjoy the country’s national drink: raki. It’s a spirit made from twice-distilled grapes and anise. The beverage is strong and flavorful, and it’s meant to be sipped on.
