When the workday is done, nothing tastes quite as refreshing as a cocktail or beer. With COVID-19 significantly impacting happy hour around the globe, you likely have to adjust to a new after-work ritual. While many restaurants are opening again, here’s how people celebrated happy hour in different countries.

How Other Countries Celebrate Happy Hour

Italy

Italy’s happy hour—or “aperitivo”—doesn’t happen until the late evening, usually between 7 and 9 pm. While many Italians indulge in aperitivo to unwind from the workday, this cocktail hour is mostly seen as a time to relax.

During this time, wine and beer are always acceptable choices. Those looking for a true aperitivo, however, might order a Campari or Aperol spritz to start the metabolism for dinner. The Negroni—a gin, vermouth, Campari concoction—is also a favorite aperitif.

Japan

Japanese professionals engage in a cultural practice known as nomikai—a much-honored form of a happy hour where coworkers enjoy drinks and food at a local bar or restaurant.

Typically, these groups will share a large buffet-style meal consisting of local favorites, such as sushi and shrimp. Beer is usually served at these events and ordered in large rounds for the entire table.

Brazil

Bars and restaurants offering happy hour options will typically serve smaller portions of pão de queijo (a cheesy tapioca flour bread) or fried plantains.

If you have a South American wine or beer in Brazil, keep in mind that it’s not seen as polite to drink directly from the bottle or can—always drink from a glass. Patrons who stick with liquor often prefer Caipirinha. This sweet and citrusy Brazilian cocktail combines sugar, lime, and cachaça—a spirit distilled from sugarcane juice.
