Having healthy grass requires proper lawn irrigation. However, many people make mistakes when watering their yards, resulting in waste, limited plant growth, and other complications. Here some mistakes you should avoid to help keep your lawn green and healthy this year.

What to Avoid When Watering the Lawn

1. Overwatering

Grass doesn’t need daily watering. If the lawn irrigation system is strictly for watering the grass, it will likely only need a session once or twice per week, depending on the weather.

Trees and shrubs that need a different amount of moisture should be watered accordingly. Each plant is different, and your system will need to take that into account.

2. Watering Under Direct Heat

Watering in the heat of the day results in water loss due to evaporation. The lawn won’t be able to absorb some of the moisture, and you risk underwatering your property.

If you only water in the hot sun, the soil will dry out and harm your grass. It’s better to provide moisture early in the morning, when the grass, soil, and air temperatures are at their lowest.

3. Using the Wrong Sprinklers

If you’re unsure about the needs of your grass, consult with a lawn care professional to find a system that works for your needs.

4. Watering Grass Blades Rather Than Roots

Make sure the lawn irrigation system sends the water into the soil and the roots. If your methods only briefly spray the lawn, the moisture will cling to the grass blades and not saturate into the soil, which will dry out the yard.

5. Wasting Water Through Overspray

Getting adequate water to the lawn is important, but letting the sprinklers spray onto the sidewalk, street, and house is wasteful. The sprinklers should be positioned to provide optimal water coverage with minimal waste. If the surrounding concrete or your siding is soaked after a session, contact a professional to adjust the fixtures.
