A garage door can be a safety issue and security risk when it doesn't operate correctly. The system involves many moving parts, and a few minor adjustments may solve any operating problems. The following troubleshooting tips will help you determine the issue before scheduling professional repairs.

How to Figure Out Why Your Garage Door Stopped Working

1. Check the Power

Make sure the opening motor is still plugged into the wall. Check if the power cord is damaged, and inspect the circuit breaker to ensure it hasn't tripped. Generally, all switches should point in the same direction.

Try opening or closing the door with the remote. Check the batteries if the remote isn't working, and test the access panel if you have one. If the door doesn't open, you may be dealing with a significant motor issue, which should be addressed by a professional.

2. Examine the Safety Sensors

If the garage door won’t close, check the safety sensors at the base of the metal tracks. These components project infrared signals to detect obstacles and prevent the door from closing and causing an injury or damage.

Make sure nothing is blocking the sensors, and wipe their lenses with a microfiber cloth to clear dust and debris. If one has been knocked out of alignment, it will need to be remounted to the same height and orientation as the other one.

3. Inspect the Tracks

Garage doors are guided along metal tracks on either side. Dust, grime, and debris can collect and obstruct the process. If the door jostles violently while opening or closing, inspect the tracks.

Clear grease and other substances with warm water and dish soap. The tracks may also need to be lubricated to help the rollers move smoothly. Have this service done every three months for optimal performance.
