3 Blooming Native Hawaiian Plants to Beautify Your Business

1. Naio

Also known as false sandalwood, this plant is found on nearly all islands. It most often grows as a shrub or tree, which can be harvested for hardwood. The ground cover form is known as naio papa. Its small, white flowers produce a scent similar to the spicy notes of true sandalwood. The plant flourishes in hot, dry areas and requires little water or pest remediation.

2. ʻĀkulikuli

native hawaiian plantWith red stems, succulent leaves, and pink flowers, this native Hawaiian plant is eye-catching even from its ground cover position. Also known as sea purslane, it favors the coast or the shores around bodies of water and is notably salt-tolerant. It’s also not picky about water and can bloom in wet or dry conditions, though it does best with full sun. Protect it from snails and slugs to keep the edible leaves for yourself.

3. Pāʻū o Hiʻiaka

Hiʻiaka is the younger sister of the volcano goddess Pele. Legends say one day while Pele was surfing, Hiʻiaka napped on the beach, and this plant grew over her to shade her from the sun. The name translates to “Hiʻiaka’s skirt.” A member of the morning glory family, its vines grow round leaves and small white or light blue flowers, providing ground cover in sand or soil. It does best in saltier conditions with minimal watering. The more sun it receives, the more it will flower. However, it can be susceptible to pests like ants or mealybugs.
