Hawaii is home to a variety of rare and beautiful plants that can help boost the appeal of any landscape. It’s especially beneficial to create a garden full of native Hawaiian plants, which are best-suited to thrive in the islands’ tropical climate and soil type. Here are a few of the most popular options to consider.

3 Native Hawaiian Plants to Add to Your Landscape

1. ‘Ohi‘a Lehua

As the official flower of the Big Island, the ‘ohi‘a lehua is one of the most iconic native Hawaiian plants. It produces vibrant blooms in red, orange, yellow, or pink that are often used for lei in ceremonies and altar decorations, making them important parts of the local culture.

The durable plant can grow anywhere. Typically, it only needs to be watered every few days once established.

2. Kalo

Growing an average of 5 to 6 feet tall, it looks like a large shrub and can have striking leaves that range in color from green to purple, depending on the species. It should be harvested every eight to 12 months to continue a healthy growth cycle.

3. Gardenia Brighamii

The Gardenia brighamii, commonly referred to as na‘u, is endemic to the islands. The federally listed endangered species is only found on Oahu and Lanai in the wild and can grow as a medium to large shrub or small tree. This plant is often used to create hedges, provide shade and privacy, and accent landscapes. It produces small white flowers with an invigorating scent and needs minimal watering.
