If you're planning a road trip as part of your summer vacation, it's important to prepare your car for the journey. Prioritizing certain vehicle maintenance tasks ahead of time can help you arrive at your destination without experiencing trouble on the roads. Here's how to get your vehicle road trip ready.

Change the Oil

vehicle maintenance

Auto engines require motor oil to lubricate internal parts, such as the cylinders, valves, and pistons. This fluid keeps these components from rubbing together, which can generate friction and heat. If oil levels become low or the fluid gets contaminated, it may not provide adequate lubrication, resulting in auto breakdowns. Having a vehicle maintenance provider replace the oil before your trip may prevent overheating and keep the engine running smoothly.

Test the Battery

Auto batteries provide power to the starter, which cranks the engine, and electrical components such as the stereo, automatic locks, and headlights. Summer heat can cause battery acids to evaporate and terminals to corrode more rapidly, depleting the voltage. A mechanic can use a multimeter to test the voltage before your road trip. If the resting voltage falls below 12.6 volts, getting a replacement can keep the starter and electrical systems functioning dependably.

Check the Tire Pressure

When tires lose air, more rubber contacts the road, separating the tread and causing blowouts. If tires contain too much air, the rubber becomes less flexible, leading to flats or blowouts, especially if you hit a pothole or curb.

Before your vacation, check the pressure by attaching a gauge to each valve stem. You'll notice a number displayed on the screen, which is the psi. Compare it with the manufacturer-recommended psi in your owner's manual or on the inside of your driver's side door. If the number on the gauge is lower, add air at the nearest filling station. If it's higher, remove air by attaching the gauge's opposite end to the valve stem.
