Buying a home with a pool will result in years of recreation and relaxation for the whole family. However, it also requires maintenance to keep it safe and usable. Before signing on the dotted line and diving straight into your new pool, schedule an inspection with an electrician for the following reasons.

The Importance of Inspections

Most modern swimming pools come with electrical wiring that runs the pumps, powers the lights, and provides electricity to nearby outlets. However, electricity should never mix with pool water, as chlorine and salt are both conductive materials. As a result, swimmers exposed to electrically charged pools can be electrocuted.

electricianSwimming pools must have proper grounding and wiring connections done according to the National Electrical Code® or NFPA 70® to prevent injuries, shocks, and fires. Electrical equipment within and around the pool, including lighting fixtures, pump motors, outlet receptacles, and power supply enclosures, should also be grounded. This ensures that all stray currents get channeled to alternate pathways on the ground.

Aside from grounding, your bonding will also be evaluated during the inspection. Bonding is the process of connecting metallic components, such as frames, fittings, cables, piping, and devices, to create an electrically conductive path. Properly done, this minimizes the risk of stray currents in the pool and on the ground around it.

The Inspection Process

During the inspection, an electrician will test and examine every electrical device and piece of equipment found within and near the swimming pool. They'll check the control panels and electrical wiring, including underground connections, for proper grounding and bonding. Also, they'll assess if all electrical installations around the pool area are up to code. If there are overhead power lines and communication cables, they'll measure the clearance to ensure the safety of swimmers.
