Winter weather can be hard on your roof. While a roofer will address any issues that occur, there are many steps you can take to avoid damage. Here’s what to do to prepare your structure for the upcoming season.

How to Avoid Roof Damage This Winter

1. Condensation

In the winter, warm air from inside your home rises and becomes trapped in the attic. As the warm, moist air comes in contact with the cold air from your rooftop, it creates condensation.

If your attic lacks ventilation, there's no way for condensation to escape, resulting in wood rot and mold growth over time. Attic insulation and unblocked roof vents will prevent these issues. Also, place fans in the attic to disperse moist air.

2. Ice Dams

rooferIce dams form when snow accumulation on the roof melts and thaws repeatedly. As it melts, water trickles down your shingles until it reaches the roof’s eaves, creating a curtain of ice.

In this situation, water can back up and seep beneath the shingles, causing damage to your roof. If an ice dam grows large enough, it can also pull your rain gutters off, potentially damaging the fascia. To reduce the risk of ice dams, re-insulate your attic if the home is over 15 years old. You can also remove snow accumulation by contacting a roofer or using a snow rake.

3. Flashing Leaks

The strips of metal placed around the connections on your roof are known as flashing. The protection is typically located on the front edges, corners, and ridges of your rooftop, as well as around chimneys and skylights.

Flashing directs water away from your home to prevent pooling and leaks. As it ages, the caulking used to fasten it can deteriorate, creating weak points that may allow water to seep in. To avoid shingle damage, rot, and mold growth, schedule a roof inspection. A professional will check your flashing and repair loose or damaged sections.
