Like all equipment with moving parts, water well pumps will eventually wear out. While some common issues are fairly easy to fix, sometimes replacing the pump is the only option. Below are a few common signs it’s time for a new well pump.

How to Tell You Need Well Water Pump Replacement

1. Low or No Water Pressure

If your faucets suddenly start trickling or run completely dry, the pump itself may be failing. The seals inside the device may have broken, or the motor could just be wearing out.

However, a total water outage is usually caused by a lack of power. Before calling for repairs, check to see whether the breaker controlling your water pump has been tripped.

2. Spitting Faucet

Faucets “spit” when air finds its way into the plumbing system. In some cases, this can be caused by broken seals in the pump that allow air into the system or insufficient water levels in the well. Fortunately, this problem can usually be traced to problems with the pressure tank, usually located inside the house. A water pump repair expert can often repair a leaking pressure tank without opening up your well.

3. A Rotten Egg Smell

Water that smells like rotten eggs usually contains a high amount of sulfur, which may indicate problems with your water quality. However, it can also be caused by sediment being sucked up into the water well pump.

If you notice strange smells, your pump may be located too low in the well or may not be the right size for your house. Sudden issues with a well that has provided clean, odor-free water for years usually point to a serious issue with the pump.

4. Rising Utility Expenses

Like all mechanical devices, water well pumps lose efficiency as they age. At first, the effect may be negligible, but as years go by you might see your energy expenses rise dramatically.

Poor insulation or aging HVAC equipment can also drive your energy bills up. However, if you’ve eliminated the other possibilities, your high utility bills may be a sign your water pump needs to be replaced.
