When your plumbing system is serviced by a water well, maintaining your pump house or the structure that protects the pressure tank and well pump is a must. This is particularly important in winter when freezing temperatures and snowstorms can affect the performance of your water well. Here’s a guide to insulating your pump house to minimize the risk of seasonal malfunctions.

Understanding the Importance of Insulating Your Well Pump House

Why Is Insulation Necessary?

While your pump house helps shield your well pump and water pressure tank from moisture and flying debris, added insulation offers a secondary level of protection. By prioritizing insulation, winter storms and freezing temperatures are less likely to turn water into ice.

As a result, you’ll minimize the risk of frozen pipes bursting or costly pump malfunctions leading to an emergency situation. In addition, you won’t have to worry about your pump freezing and restricting your access to water deep in the well.

How Can You Insulate?

Well-PumpA wide range of materials can be effective for insulating a pump house. Start by focusing on the actual walls and flooring of the house as you would a normal property. Placing fiberglass or spray foam insulation along walls and between exposed studs can be highly effective.

When you’re concerned about moisture-related damage and mold growth, a foam board composed of polyurethane is another great choice for wall insulation. Depending on the set up of your pump house, adding sturdy indoor-outdoor carpeting to the floor can also add warmth.

Once the structure has been tended to, focus on any exposed pipes within or surrounding the pump house. To insulate these sections, apply heat tape or add foam pipe sleeves and wrap them in duct tape. An insulation blanket or a specially-designed pressure tank cover that protects both switches and the outside of the tank is recommended to eliminate any weak spots that could freeze up.
