Over the last year, many restaurants have operated at reduced capacity or spent long periods shuttered completely. During these periods of reduced activity, it's easy for the maintenance of ice machines and other essential commercial refrigeration equipment to be overlooked. If you’re experiencing issues with your ice machine, here are some troubleshooting tips to get your system functioning again.

How to Troubleshoot Your Commercial Ice Machine

1. Clogged Waterline

If your machine stops dispensing ice, it may not be a mechanical issue. First, check to ensure the machine is receiving water. Over time, mineral deposits can build up inside the water line, especially if the machine hasn’t been regularly used, which can obstruct the flow of water to the machine. Sometimes, the water valve may simply get turned off. If your lines seem clear and the valve is open, call in a professional to inspect your machine.

2. Dislodged Feeler Arm

The feeler arm is a mechanical device that tracks how much ice is in the machine. When levels get high enough, the cubes in the outer tray push the arm up, which turns the machine off. If your machine isn’t dispensing ice, the arm may simply be stuck in position. To resolve the issue, simply remove the excess ice and pull the feeler arm down again.

3. Leaky Valve

Water leaks inside the machine can allow cubes to grow too large—to the point that they will eventually get stuck and cause the evaporator to freeze over. In most cases, this is caused by a leaking valve, which usually requires the expertise of a commercial refrigeration professional to repair.

4. Extreme Temperatures

If the machine isn’t making enough ice, a water line may be frozen. Turning off the machine and allowing it to defrost completely may clear up the issue and increase production to normal levels. Ice production is also affected by the temperature of the water and air in the room. If the room where your machine is stored is too warm, your machine will naturally produce ice more slowly.
