Hard chrome plating is a type of surface engineering in which a specialized chrome-based layer is used to coat a base metal. Also sometimes referred to as industrial chrome, this material provides added resistance against corrosion as well as general wear and tear. Its durability makes it useful in a variety of industries as it can be used to enhance the longevity of medical devices, machine parts, and even aircraft landing gear. Find out what makes hard chrome plating so tough below.

How Does Hard Chrome Plating Work?

Hard chrome plating is created using an electrolytic process. An energy current is used to build up chromium metal on the surface of the component to be plated. The thickness of the chrome plating can be adjusted, ranging from 2 to 250 micrometers.

What Are the Benefits of Hard Chrome Plating?

Hard chrome is extremely tough and is typically more wear resistant—even compared to steel—and can handle large amounts of stress. It is also extremely resistant to corrosion, has a very low wear rate, and produces little friction. Hard chrome plating can be very helpful when used on piston rods and hydraulic cylinders, as well. Finally, the plating is chemically inert and won’t react with other substances.

Adding hard chrome plating makes other materials stronger and more lasting. Thanks to the fact that it produces little friction, it can even save energy costs—for instance, if implemented in moving machinery parts. While it's extremely useful, the hard chrome plating process requires serious chemicals and should be left to qualified, certified professionals.
