When you find water damage in your home, the faster you act, the easier the restoration process will be. While you're waiting for the restoration professionals to arrive, there are several ways you can keep water damage from spreading. Learn from the tips below, so you can save as much of your home and belongings as possible.

How to Reduce Water Damage

1. Disconnect Electrical Items

Anything hooked up to electrical power is especially vulnerable to water damage. If the water seeps into your electric system, it could cause power malfunctions that damage those connected items. You should disconnect all items and move them away from the water leak to the best of your ability. Don't forget to move your wireless electronics too.

2. Dry Affected Areas

If you have any spare fans or dehumidifiers, set them up in the rooms afflicted with water damage. Keep them at a safe distance from the water since these are electronics that can be damaged if water touches the batteries or control panels. If you have any rugs, pillows, or removable upholstery, dry them as soon as possible to prevent mold growth. Depending on their wash instructions, you can throw them in the dryer or hang them up to dry.

3. Stop the Water Leak

You may not be able to provide a permanent solution yourself, but you can temporarily reduce water damage until the professionals arrive to put a stop to its cause. Use old towels, buckets, and bowls to catch leaking water. This can help you control the damage, keeping moisture from seeping into your floors and nearby objects that cannot be moved.
