On the construction site, few vehicles are more utilized than the dump truck. Built to get construction aggregate transported, these trucks haul heavy loads with ease, continuously moving the material from point A to point B. But did you know these workhorse haulers come in many different sizes and specifications? Here are four common dump truck types and how they are used.
4 Common Dump Truck Types
1. Standard Dump Trucks
These standard or rigid-frame dump trucks are the most-used type on the construction site. The dump chassis is operated by a hydraulic ram situated between the cab and the body. Standard dump trucks are available in six- and ten-wheeler configurations and can only be driven on gravel, concrete, and other hard roads.
2. Transfer Dump Truck
Transfer dump trucks are pulled by a separate trailer with a moveable cargo container, which is powered by a mounted electric motor that travels on a tractor with wheels that roll into the trailer frame of the main dump truck. The transfer dump truck is commonly used at construction sites to transport demolition waste, sand, and gravel.
3. Side Dump Trucks
Side dump trucks can be tilted to the side to unload the aggregate. These trucks can be unloaded much quicker than other types, but they hold less volume than standard dump trucks. Their long length prevents the side dump truck from tipping over, but they have limited maneuverability and operate best on sites where there is ample space for moving.
4. Articulated Dump Trucks
These heavy-duty dump trucks are made to transport heavy loads over rough, off-road terrain. Commonly used in mining excavation operations and other sites where large amounts of materials will need to be hauled, they often used for driving long distances and can handle loads between 40 to 60 tons.
