Also known as a "saltwater tang," the orange band surgeonfish is a brightly colored, oval-shaped fish that spends its time near tropical reefs. During your Hanauma Bay snorkeling trip, you may see a single fish feeding alone or many traveling in groups. It reaches 6 to 15 inches long and gets its name from the orange band along the sides above the fins, and from the dangerous, scalpel-shaped spikes alongside the tail.

3. Moorish Idol

The Moorish Idol has a distinctive appearance, similar to an angel fish, with a disc-shaped body, a tubular snout, small fins, and an enormous, flowing dorsal crest. The Moorish Idol features unique coloring, with alternating black, white, and yellow bands. It prefers shallow waters and flat reefs. Normally seen alone or in pairs, it sometimes can be found in small schools. It is active during daylight hours and retreats to reef bottoms at night.
