While fruit juice is a healthier option than sodas and other "soft" drinks, it still has a high sugar and acid content. This means an increased risk of tooth decay and damage, especially in children, and more frequent trips to the dentist. Here are some important things to know about how fruit juice affects kids' teeth and how to select healthier alternatives.

Effects of Fruit Juice

The sugars in most fruit juices are fructose or glucose. While these are naturally occurring sugars, they are, ultimately, still sugars. And some manufacturers add white sugar or corn syrup to enhance the sweetness factor even more. But any sugar erodes the teeth, interacting with bacteria in the mouth to produce acids that eat away at tooth enamel and trigger the formation of pits and caries, more commonly known as cavities.

This is especially concerning for a child's oral health because kids' teeth are generally softer and have thinner enamel. With less protection of the tooth structure, there is an even greater risk of decay, cavities, staining, and tooth loss, any of which require a dentist's attention. And more visits to the dentist may increase a child's anxiety as well.

Healthy Alternatives to Juice

Water is the best alternative to juice. If your child finds water boring or unappealing, add a slice or two of fresh fruit. You can also make drinking water a more fun experience by using a novelty straw or serving it in a favorite cup.

Milk is another great option. It has a high calcium content, and calcium is one of the primary ingredients in tooth enamel, so drinking milk can help in the formation of strong enamel and healthier teeth.Your child doesn't need to give up juice completely. The occasional glass or juice-box is perfectly fine as a treat. Be sure your child uses a straw, as this will help route the juice past the teeth toward the back of the mouth, reducing the chances of serious tooth damage.
