Some people experience an increase in spinal pain and discomfort after chiropractic treatment. This is often a temporary development that typically goes away on its own after a few treatments. Learn more about how chiropractic therapy can cause this minor discomfort, and what you can do about it.

Causes of Post-Treatment Tightness

Nerves Are No Longer Compressed

When your spine is misaligned, it’s common for the nerves in your back to become compressed. This can actually reduce the amount of spinal pain you’re feeling, which is why many people with back issues complain of numbness and tingling. Once the chiropractor makes an adjustment, these nerves will no longer be compressed. That can lead to some discomfort as they regain feeling.

You’re Experiencing “Retracing”

spinal painWhen you have back problems, your body will compensate in other areas. Over time, these areas will also become stiff and will need to heal along with the underlying injury. This process is known as retracing, and many chiropractors believe it’s a sign the treatment is working.

Inactive Muscles Are Being Stimulated

Muscle compensation can also cause some muscle groups to be underused. Once your spine is aligned properly, these muscles will be engaged again, which can cause soreness if they’ve been unused for a long time. In this case, you may experience soreness a few days after your treatment as you begin using new muscle groups during daily activities.

What Can You Do About Soreness?

Soreness typically lasts only one or two days after treatment. Along with the tips provided by your chiropractor, you can apply ice and heat to the area. Apply ice the first day and then switch to moist heat on the second day. Try to refrain from any strenuous activities until the soreness subsides.
