Planning the birth of a baby is exciting, and there are several delivery options available to help women and families create an experience that’s best for them and their little ones. While speaking with your OB-GYN can help you decide, you can also get informed about your choices to select a method that feels comfortable to you.

A Guide to Your Delivery Options

1. Cesarean Section

Also known as a C-section, this method involves making a small incision on the abdomen to deliver the baby. Since it’s considered a form of surgery, this method comes with additional recovery time. Cesarean sections are sometimes the safest method for mothers with birthing complications or women who are delivering multiple babies.

2. At-Home

ob-gynIf you prefer to give birth in a familiar environment, a natural delivery at home may be an ideal option for you. This method involves minimal interference and monitoring, which means little to no medication or medical procedures. While the process is allowed to unfold naturally, you can still receive delivery support from a midwife or doula.

3. Vaginal

This is the most common delivery method, and the baby will pass through the birth canal as you push. This method can take place at home or in a hospital, and it can include additional support from medication or labor induction. Vaginal delivery is often recommended for healthy women and babies, as it comes with a relatively fast recovery.

4. Water

Some women opt to deliver in a tub of water, as this provides some additional comfort and creates a smooth transition into the world for a new baby. To take advantage of this option, you’ll need to set up a portable tub in the home or find a hospital or birthing center that provides them.
