Geoprobe® is a brand of tools and equipment that collect samples from subsurface layers of earth. They can be used to sample soil, groundwater, or gas, and they access these deposits through less invasive methods than traditional drilling. Here, learn more about Geoprobe products with answers to some of the most commonly asked questions on how they work and the benefits they provide.
A Guide to Understanding Geoprobe
How does Geoprobe equipment work?
The equipment does not make large holes or cuttings in the earth. Instead, it is a hydraulically powered machine that creates small-diameter holes using static force and dynamic percussion. The combination of weight and percussion rearranges the components of the subsurface to accommodate the insertion of a tool string. The tool string draws out samples and is removed from the ground.
How long does it take to extract a sample with Geoprobe?
Penetration rates are extremely quick. The average speed is anywhere from five to 25 feet per minute. In a typical day, 20 to 40 sample locations can be visited. Setup and breakdown of equipment are also easy and stress-free.
How deeply can Geoprobe equipment penetrate?
Geoprobe can penetrate as much as 100 feet or more, with some rates as deep as 200 feet into the earth. The equipment can drill through surface pavement with a thickness of 12 inches or greater. Generally, Geoprobe works best with unconsolidated sediments.
What are the benefits of Geoprobe?
In addition to being minimally invasive and offering quick, in-depth sampling, Geoprobe decreases disturbances in the samples it takes, resulting in more accurate testing. You also need fewer monitor wells and less oversize equipment disrupting your property.
