Collecting paper currency requires careful maintenance. Unlike old coins, paper money has delicate fibers that are more vulnerable to discoloration and deterioration over the years. To help you preserve your collection, here’s a guide on how to handle and store it.

4 Ways to Protect Paper Money

1. Wear Gloves When Handling

Since the oils from your skin run the risk of staining and damaging paper money, put on soft cotton or nitrile gloves before you handle it. Use studded tweezers to examine the bills, and prevent contamination by cleaning off flat surfaces before placing the currency on them.

Invest in protective sleeves for your money that are free of acid and PVC, which can damage the paper. Use storage sleeves made from polyester film instead that will let you clearly see your currency while protecting it from moisture and fingerprints.

3. Store & Display In Safe Areas

Store and display your paper money collection away from light, heat, and moisture. These elements often cause the ink to fade and the paper to tear and crumble. Illuminate display cases with halogen bulbs that don’t emit harmful UV rays, and store your collection in a cool, dry area of your home.

4. Call the Professionals for Repairs

If you notice any damage to your paper money, such as tearing or discoloration, leave the repairs to the professionals. Attempting them yourself may worsen the damage and decrease the appraisal value of the paper currency.
