Coin collecting is a common hobby that can be lucrative as well. Rare or old coins can fetch a substantial price. But before you can sell them, it’s best to have them appraised to know what they’re worth. Here’s how to prepare for the process.

How to Get Rare & Old Coins Ready for Appraisal

1. Separate Mint Coins From Damaged Ones

Undamaged coins will fetch more money than coins that are dented, have a hole in them, or have been cleaned. Separate the mint from the damaged or cleaned coins to ensure they remain pristine and make it easier for the appraiser to organize your collection.

2. Don’t Clean Them

Cleaning rare or old coins significantly reduces their value. An amateur cleaning is likely to not only remove grime but also defining characteristics of the coin. Leaving scratches is also a risk.

3. Organize Your Coins

4. Get Rare Coins Authenticated

If you have some rare or old coins, get them authenticated. Convincing counterfeit coins exist, and having them will raise questions about the rest of your collection.

Send your especially rare coins to a third-party coin grading company. They’ll authenticate and grade your coin. Having proof that the coin is legitimate will help your appraiser make a more informed decision.
