3. Tendonitis

Muscles and bones are connected by tendons, which can become inflamed and painful due to repetitive strain. This condition, known as tendonitis, often affects runners and other athletes. However, it can also result from wearing shoes that are too tight for an extended period. The pain occurs at the top of the foot and tends to be most severe when running and walking. 

Rest is the first treatment for tendonitis. This typically involves walking as little as you can for about two days and applying ice to the area to decrease swelling. If the pain does not stop after rest, your foot doctor may recommend anti-inflammatory medication or a corticosteroid injection. Severe cases, such as when the tendon detaches from the bone, may require surgery.
