Kentucky 2019 Crossbow Season for Deer Has Been Extended
Crossbow hunting is an increasingly popular sport, and to meet the greater demand for hunters, the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Department has extended the crossbow season for deer hunting. This gives hunters throughout the state ample time in the field to help regulate local deer populations.
Your Guide to Crossbow Hunting
Season Extension
The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Department will open crossbow hunting for deer on Saturday, September 21, 2019, and close on the third Monday in January 2020. The new legislation also allows youth hunters aged 15 and younger to hunt deer throughout the season. Kentucky legislation previously did this for senior hunters aged 65 and older, too. Since a bag limit will be in place, there’s no concern about overharvesting the state’s deer population.
Benefits of Crossbow Hunting
Many people find crossbow hunting less intimidating and cost-effective. Guns, especially for youth hunters, can be overwhelming and tricky to handle at first. They’re also expensive to purchase and maintain. In some cases, they can also require more training. Crossbows can be easier to aim since no power is required to hold the draw and are especially effective at short ranges.
