As hunting season continues, gun shops are helping hunters prepare for hours of outdoor activities. However, with the recent outbreaks of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) among the herds, be sure to steer clear of infected animals. While these conditions have not been found to affect humans, the following guide will help you recognize the signs to avoid eating contaminated meat.

What’s the Difference Between EHD & CWD?

Transmission

EHD is a viral infection that is spread through the bite of an infected insect. It’s not contagious and will only spread as the insects move through the herd.

CWD, on the other hand, is a syndrome that targets the central nervous system, causing a gradual deformation in the proteins of the brain. It’s extremely contagious and can be transferred through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected deer.

Symptoms

gun shopDeer with EHD tend to become feverish a few hours following a bite. Their necks and tongues will swell, and hemorrhaging will appear around the heart and pulmonary artery, causing extreme internal blood loss.

Those with CWD may not show symptoms right away. Once the incubation period passes, their coordination will begin to deteriorate, and they’ll rapidly lose weight. Additional symptoms include listlessness, excessive thirst, and showing no fear of humans.

Outcome

While some deer do survive an EHD bite, many succumb to the fast-moving infection shortly after exposure. CWD, on the other hand, is much slower and allows the animals to live for several months before causing a sudden decline in health.

Because the infection could still be in their system, be sure to test the meat of any questionable prey before you consume it. You should also report any sightings to your local Game Commission region office, as pinpointing the location will help contain the infection.
