Durable, long-lasting, and available in a myriad of colors, sheet metal roofing is a wise choice for many homeowners. Not only can this type of residential roofing withstand strong winds and heavy rain, but it's also non-combustible. Compared to other roofing materials, it's also easy to maintain, but it's not totally maintenance-free. If you're planning to have one installed or have moved into place with a sheet metal roof, here's what you need to know.

How to Maintain Sheet Metal Roofs

1. Clear Debris

Twigs, leaves, and anything else that accumulates on the surface should be removed ASAP, as they can scratch the finish and leave the sheet metal looking dingy. Furthermore, depending on the amount, mold and grime can start to form, and cleaning it off will be a struggle. If there's excessive moisture, some roofing joints and components could be vulnerable to corrosion and rusting. To prevent this, use a brush to sweep off the debris every now and then.

2. Clean Gutters

If debris is stuck in the gutters, it will either damage the finish or start corroding. Moreover, it's going to impede drainage. Cleaning residential roofing gutters should be done at least twice a year. You can also install gutter guards; these are perforated metal pieces that block out debris while still allowing water through, so it can go into the downspout. They're much easier to clean.

3. Prune Nearby Trees

While it's important to keep the roof clean, the surrounding area must also be dealt with. If any tree limbs get too close to the roof, they could scratch the surface of the sheet metal when it gets windy. If there's a storm, the branches could break, fall on top of it, and dent it. Even though metal roofs are very sturdy, a significant dent is unsightly and will affect how water falls off the surface. You should have a clearance of about 10 feet around your residential roofing.
