A wood deck can provide the perfect outdoor living space for cookouts and other get-togethers. However, constant exposure to sunlight, rain, and other environmental hazards over time can cause the wood to deteriorate. Staining your deck will provide much-needed protection against weathering and wear while also emphasizing the surface’s colors and textures. Here’s how to get the job done right.

Preparing the Deck

Remove all furniture, plants, and other items so you have full access to the wood surface. Replace missing nails, sand down splintered areas with a belt sander, and sweep away all debris, including in the areas between boards. Next, use a specialty deck cleaner to wash away any dirt or mildew. Rinse the surface with a pressure washer, then let the wood dry completely—typically at least two days—before applying the stain. Once the surface is dry, protect surfaces you don’t want to stain, such as siding, with painter’s tape.

Applying the Stain

If your deck includes raised features such as railings and balusters, start there. Stir the stain and pour it into a paint tray, then use a paintbrush to cover these areas with long, even strokes. The paintbrush will help the stain infiltrate deeper into the pores of the wood than if it is applied with a paint roller.

After the raised features are done, you can move on to the deck boards. A paint pad applicator will help you stain the surface quicker than a brush while still achieving a deep, even coating. You can touch up problem areas with a paintbrush afterward. Work toward an exit point, such as your back door or the stairs to the deck, so you don’t get trapped. The stain should be given 24 hours to dry.
