Golf is a game of mental and physical exertion. It is both relaxing and challenging. Before you can get into the game, however, it is important that you understand some basics in terminology. To help, Royal Kunia Country Club, a top public golf course in Waipahu, HI, has shared their knowledge. Study these basic terms and their meanings to grasp a better understanding of the game as a whole.

Basic Golf Vocabulary

Tee-Off

When you tee-off, this means you are hitting your shot off a tee. This is also a common phrase used when referring to the time you are beginning a game. If friends ask you to go golfing with them and say they are teeing-off at 9:00 a.m., that means the game starts at nine.

Slice

When you hit the golf ball and it curves to the far right, this is called a slice. It is an undesirable action resulting from a less-than-excellent swing. Take note that for left-handed players, a slice is when the ball curves to the far left.

Fade

golfA fade is considered a positive shot. It flies seamlessly and curves only slightly to the right. You may earn yourself a polite golf clap if you achieve a fade.

Fore

We have all heard people shouting fore at the top of their lungs, but what does this mean? In fact, when one screams “fore” it is because they have hit a particularly bad shot and fear it may injure someone or something. If you hear the word, be aware of rouge golf balls.

Mulligan

A mulligan is given to players who have made a mistake and wish to take a do-over. If allowed, a mulligan will discount the previous shot and give the player a second chance. If you are new to the game, you may ask for multiple of these.
