Golf is a relaxing sport, and it’s enjoyed by enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. If you’re a beginner, you may be familiar with some of its terms, but they can be challenging to understand if you haven’t played. If you’re gearing up to visit a course soon or are interested in learning more, here’s what you should know about the basic vocabulary of the sport.

5 Golf Terms You Should Know

1. Par

Experienced golfers attempt to complete a hole in a specific number of shots, or par. A par per hole can be anything from three to five. This figure is based on a realistic gauge of how many shots it’ll generally take a skilled performer to complete the hole, plus two. If a hole can be reached in two shots, then its par would be four. During scoring, par is typically assigned as a combined number of shots through each hole they play.

2. Bogey

golfA player scores a bogey if they complete a hole at least one over par. For example, when a golfer completes a three-par hole in four swings, it’s considered a bogey score. A double bogey refers to scoring two over par, a triple bogey three over par, and so forth.

3. Birdie

By contrast, a player may score a birdie on the golf course when they complete the hole in fewer shots than anticipated. For example, when a player completes the three-par hole in two swings instead of four, they made a birdie.

4. Putt

Putting is the act of gently using a golf club to make a light stroke. This move is ideal for practicing because it’s easy to perform anywhere, from inside the home to the backyard. You’ll likely use putting to complete a hole.

5. Handicap

A player’s general performance on the course is referred to as their handicap. Their handicap is established based on how many strokes above par the golfer scores in a single round.
