Gravel driveways are inexpensive alternatives to asphalt and concrete, providing rustic charm to your home. However, even though the gravel allows for drainage, intense rain and snow can start to erode the driveway. Luckily, if you have had gravel washout issues in the past from water runoff, there are several ways to prevent further difficulties and maintain your driveway’s appearance and functionality.

How to Prevent Gravel Driveway Washout

1. Pack the Gravel Tightly

Gravel that is not tightly packed is at greater risk of loosening and washing away during storms. However, you can use a shovel or plate compactor to pack the driveway down, especially when poor weather is in the forecast. Ideally, your gravel should be jagged as opposed to smooth since sharp stones can lock together and dig into the ground to prevent sliding.

2. Inspect the Driveway After Storms

During a storm, water can pool up in the gravel and create holes that get larger from the water pressure on the surrounding stones. After a storm, use a rake and sharp gravel to fill in the driveway where it is needed, and then use a shovel or plate compactor to press the new gravel into the soil.

3. Use Plastic Pavers

Plastic grid pavers go over the top of your gravel driveway, compressing and stabilizing it to significantly reduce movement. They typically come in black, white, and green colors, and eliminate frequent raking and backfilling. Before applying the pavers, the driveway should be level, so you might need to fill in a few depressed areas first.

4. Add Borders

Wooden or stone borders keep gravel from spreading and ending up in the street, storm drains, or your lawn. You can use stone borders if your driveway is curved to easily arrange the stones, while wooden borders accommodate a straight driveway. If you choose wood, however, opt for pressure-treated options that protect against weather-related rot and insect damage.
