Monitoring the levels of your heating oil tank is essential for indoor comfort, reducing the risk of a sudden shutdown and ensuring consistent temperatures. However, not knowing the proper techniques can make it difficult to schedule a timely refill. Here’s a simple guide that you can use to take the necessary measurements and preserve the functionality of your furnace.

How to Keep Track of Home Heating Oil Levels

1. Use a Dipstick

A dipstick is a thin strip of metal that's long enough to reach toward the bottom of the tank. Its slightly concave design allows a thin layer of oil residue to remain along the surface when you pull it out of the opening. Markings along the length of the stick indicate the current oil level and when to schedule a refill.

2. Check the Gauge

Depending on the tank's design, you might find a transparent capsule built into the top of the container. Inside is a floating device that raises and lowers with the internal levels.

Check this indicator at least once a month to determine the need for a refill. If the gauge is hovering near the base, it’s time to set up an oil delivery.

3. Install a Digital Monitor

You won’t have to worry about manually checking the tank with a digital monitor. Using an infrared beam, this device regularly measures the levels in the tank and sends alerts directly to your phone. If something were to cause a sudden drop in fuel, such as a crack in the casing or a loose connection, an alarm will sound to reveal the need for immediate service.

4. Perform a Visual Inspection

If you don’t have a way to take measurements, a visual inspection should do the trick. Simply unscrew the cap of the tank and shine a flashlight into the opening. A reflection indicates that the current oil levels don't warrant an immediate refill. Signs of solids or sludge tend to reveal that you’re near the bottom of the tank and should schedule a delivery as soon as possible.
