The oil tank is the heart of your heating system, providing the fuel necessary to keep your home and family safe, warm, and comfortable throughout the colder months. While tanks are designed to last, they typically need to be replaced every 10 to 20 years or when signs of damage or wear and tear are present. Use this guide to discover a few common indicators that a new oil tank is in order.
How to Tell If You Need a New Tank
1. Visible Exterior Damage
The walls of a tank are relatively thick, so if there is visible damage on the exterior, there’s likely even more damage on the inside. This means more significant chances of leaks, lost oil, and decreased efficiency.
Look for corrosion, rust, holes, and unexplained dents. You can protect the tank from further damage by sweeping snow away from it and removing overhanging icicles throughout the winter.
2. Wet Spots
Wet spots around the tank are surefire signs that a leak is present. You may not see the source of the leak, as the opening could be as small as a pinole. No matter the size, leaks can create wet areas or oil puddles around the container.
You might also notice the smell of oil in the immediate vicinity. In most cases, leaks result from corrosion inside the tank. This problem occurs when excess moisture and sediment gets trapped within the container.
3. Unstable Legs
Inspect the legs of the tank to ensure they’re strong, sturdy, and holding the unit evenly and stably. Weakened legs generally indicate that the tank is damaged or compromised in other spots and its instability has reached the supporting units. You’ll likely need a new tank to ensure the safety of your home and prevent future problems.
