More and more children need glasses every year. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 40 percent of children now have myopia compared to just 20 percent in the 1970s. Yet, while wearing glasses as a kid is nothing new, it can still take a while to adjust to the change. As a parent, here are some ways you can help your child adapt.

How to Help Your Child Adjust to Glasses

1. Let the Child Choose the Frames

Children tend to have strong opinions on what they like (and don't like) in various matters, including their clothing and accessories. Allowing your child to choose their frames will go a long way toward embracing their new glasses.

You can set a budget, but within it, let your child pick the color, shape, style and design to suit their personality. If they love their glasses, they'll be happier wearing them.

2. Get the Glasses Properly Fitted

Nobody, even an adult, enjoys wearing uncomfortable glasses. It's important to ensure your child's glasses fit properly, particularly around the nose and ears. Aside from discomfort, poorly fitting glasses can lead to headaches and dizziness. If your child complains their glasses are pinching or sliding, go back to the store or optometrist's office for a re-fitting.

3. Start Slowly and Permit Breaks

Your child's vision may be hampering them at school, which you hope glasses will improve. However, you may want to tone down your eagerness so that your child can get used to the change.

Instead of wearing glasses the entire day right away, your child might do better to start with an hour. Then, they can increase the time gradually. During the first few weeks, you should permit breaks at home to give their eyes a rest.

4. Stay Positive

Positive reinforcement, compliments, and encouragement can boost your child's confidence now that glasses have altered their outward appearance. Praise your child for caring for their glasses properly. Point out how great they look with a favorite outfit. Plus, it may be helpful to remind them of celebrities, characters, and heroes who wear glasses, like Harry Potter.
