Dental anxiety affects people of all ages, but it’s especially prevalent in younger patients. If your child is nervous about going to the dentist, appointments can be a challenging experience. This feeling can also interfere with their oral health, putting them at a greater risk for tooth and gum problems. By guiding them through their fears, you allow them to feel more comfortable during visits. Here are a few ways you can help ease their concerns.

How to Manage Dental Anxiety in Children

1. Explain What to Expect at Appointments

It can be tempting to keep upcoming dentist appointments a secret until arriving at the office, but it’s better to tell your child in advance. This notice gives them time to mentally prepare and process their feelings.

Without giving complex details, you should explain what will happen during the visit. For example, if they’re going in for a routine checkup, remind them this usually involves a teeth cleaning, an exam, and X-rays. Knowing what to expect can put your child’s mind at ease.

2. Use Positive Language

Words like “shot” and “pain” are scary and intimidating to children. Additionally, trying to relate to your child’s fears can trigger stress.

Children often develop dental anxiety because of stories they’ve heard from others. As such, refrain from using negative language or sharing any bad experiences you’ve had. Instead, remain positive when talking about the dentist and emphasize the benefits of good oral hygiene.

3. Encourage Them to Ask Questions

While you should be supportive and reassuring, you also want to help your child grow past their anxiety. A way to do this is by encouraging them to speak directly to their dentist rather than through you. Doing so will ensure they get appropriate answers to their questions. It also allows them to build a relationship with their dental care provider so they can gain more confidence.

4. Be Consistent With Dentist Visits

Children with dental anxiety should visit the dentist regularly to help them get used to the exams and procedures. Thus, schedule checkups every six months as recommended. This consistency will make it easier for them to become familiar with the office and staff, increasing the likelihood that they’ll start to feel safe and secure in this environment.
