As any dentist will tell you, brushing your teeth is essential to oral hygiene. You might assume that aggressively doing it is beneficial, but this habit causes more harm than good. Keep your teeth and gums healthy and looking their best by learning the warning signs of excessive brushing below.

How to Tell You're Brushing Your Teeth Too Hard

1. Worn Toothbrush

Dentists recommend changing your toothbrush at least once every three to four months. Failing to swap the current tool for a new one can result in frayed bristles that won't effectively remove plaque and food debris from your teeth.

If your toothbrush looks flattened, splayed, or worn before the three- or four-month period, you might be brushing too forcefully. To avoid the habit, use an electric model with a built-in sensor that alerts you that you're applying too much pressure.

2. Sensitive Teeth

Sensitivity can develop when the enamel wears thin. This outer layer protects the inner dental structures, including tooth pulp and nerve endings. It also shields the dentin, which contains tubules that stimulate nerves after encountering hot, cold, sticky, or acidic foods, leading to pain.

Overbrushing wears down the enamel. As a result, it leaves the inner parts of the tooth exposed. Experiencing sharp dental pain after sipping a cold or hot beverage can indicate enamel loss.

3. Receding Gums

Gum recession is a typical consequence of brushing too hard. The soft tissues will draw tight, exposing more of the surfaces of your teeth. The condition creates pockets between the gums and teeth, which allow disease-carrying bacteria to hide. Consequently, you can experience damaged soft tissue, tooth decay, and jawbone density loss. Aggressively brushing your teeth can also lead to bleeding gums.
