Proper dental care isn’t only about your teeth. To maintain a healthy set of pearly whites, you need to take steps to prevent gum disease. However, you may be unsure what steps to incorporate into your routine. The guide below explores why you should keep soft tissue healthy and how to practice good oral hygiene.

Why Should You Take Care of Your Gums?

The gums play a critical role in protecting teeth, providing a stable structure and a seal that keeps bacteria away from the bone. These microorganisms interact with the sugars and starches in consumed food, producing acids and plaque that stick to the teeth. This can cause infections that break down the enamel, lead to cavities, damage gums, and increase the risk of gum disease, also known as periodontitis. Without healthy soft tissues to support and protect your smile, bacteria can eventually destroy the bone and cause tooth loss.

Gum disease can also affect more than your oral health. Compared with the general population, people with periodontitis have two to three times the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. This problem can be due to the increased chronic inflammation that comes with the disease. Periodontitis can also be a risk factor for pneumonia and worsen conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

How Can You Maintain Healthy Gums?

Dental Care Routine

Proper dental care can keep the gums healthy and strong. Brush your teeth and gumline for two minutes, twice daily, with fluoride toothpaste. To avoid damaging these soft tissues, use a soft-bristled tool and apply firm but gentle strokes. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles begin to wear out—whichever comes first.

Another essential oral care task is flossing. When performing this task, curve the string under each tooth to clean along the gumline. You can also help reduce bacteria in the mouth and slow plaque development by using an antiseptic mouthwash every day.

Diet

A proper diet can contribute to healthy gums. High-fiber fruits and veggies help clean teeth, and polyphenol-rich teas reduce the bacteria that produce plaque in the mouth. Drinking water regularly also helps by washing away food particles. Other items that contribute to healthy gums and can reduce the risk of periodontal disease include oats, brown rice, and whole grain bread or pasta.

Limit the consumption of sticky candies, starchy foods, and sugary and acidic beverages like soft drinks and juice. The likelihood and severity of periodontal disease are also much higher in smokers, so if you have this habit, seek resources to quit.
