While cats can be loving, independent pets, they don't have a reputation for being very obedient. As a result, most people don't try to teach them commands the same way they would as a dog. However, just like they can be trained to use a litter box, they can also be encouraged to respond to different calls, making certain tasks more manageable. The pet care guide below explores a few you can work on.

What Tricks Are Useful for Cats to Know?

1. "Easy"

Small puppies and kittens often like to use their mouths when they play. However, this can result in them accidentally hurting a person, so you must teach them right from wrong early. Put a food substance on your hands and encourage them to lick you. However, if they get a bit too feisty and start nibbling, say "Easy" or "Gentle" and pull them away. Don't punish or scold them but focus on being positive when they are behaving well.

2. "Come"

Creating positive associations is the foundation for teaching a cat every command. To teach them to come or respond to their name, yell this out whenever you are about to pour food into their bowl. Once they have learned that coming means you will feed them, you can also call them at other times and reward them with a treat. Performing this routine for five minutes a day, twice a day, will get the message across without overwhelming the cat. Eventually, they should come even when you don't always give them a treat.

3. "Carrier"

When transporting your cat to a relative's house or to the vet, they will need to get into a cat carrier for the car ride. However, if you wait for these moments to get them used to the crate, they might develop anxiety around it. To avoid this, leave the carrier with the door open in your living room. Cats tend to love exploring cubbyholes, cardboard boxes, and other contained spaces, so they will likely go inside it at some point. When they do, reward their behavior and say "Carrier."

You could also encourage them to go inside by pointing a laser or putting a toy in the crate, saying "Carrier," and then giving them a treat when they comply. In addition, consider taking them for practice drives that end up back in the house so that they know there is nothing to worry about.
