When your child has a toothache, treating it quickly and carefully is paramount. The right treatment depends on the cause and severity of the pain. Some aches are caused by a cavity, a tooth coming in, or even just a piece of food stuck between two teeth. Until a pediatric dentist examines your child's teeth and determines the cause of the discomfort, here are some options you can try.

How to Soothe a Child's Toothache

1. Warm Water & Salt Rinse

If your child has a toothache related to a cavity or abscess, saltwater can help minimize any inflammation, as it has antibacterial properties. Begin by mixing a teaspoon of basic table salt in an eight-ounce glass of warm water and have your child swish it in their mouth. The water should be warm but not hot, meaning it should be comfortable enough to keep the water in their mouth for an extended amount of time. Anything too hot or cold can exacerbate the pain. Alternatively, if the pain is simply because of food debris trapped in between two teeth, rinsing can help dislodge it.

2. Ice Pack or Cold Compress

If the tooth and the surrounding area feel swollen, try an ice pack or cold compress. This is especially helpful if your child is having trouble sleeping. The coldness will make the blood vessels constrict and minimize the swelling. Don't forget to wrap the pack or compress with a soft towel or cloth so that it's not too cold on their cheek. Also, place it on the affected area at intervals of 15 to 20 minutes at a time to prevent an ice burn.

3. Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

Finally, if neither of the above appears to help, try an over-the-counter pain reliever, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. These are anti-inflammatory medications and useful if your child has a tooth coming in or if their braces have recently been adjusted. Only use the dosage suitable for children.
