Window treatments accumulate dust, dander, hair, and other unsightly particles, causing them to discolor and wear over time. However, regularly cleaning them can prevent this from happening. If you’ve never done this chore before, it can be easy to damage your blinds. Use the following guide for tips on how to clean them properly and avoid any mishaps.

Do:

Dust prior to cleaning.

Gently dust your blinds before implementing further cleaning techniques. Not only will it make the task easier, but it will also trap and clear away loose particles and dust that are prone to spreading easily.

Use soft materials.

blindsMicrofiber, lambswool, acrylic, or polyester cloths are recommended for cleaning blinds since these gentle materials pick up dust easily. A rubber sponge is also a helpful tool for brushing debris off fabric and vinyl installations. Do not use anything plastic because it will scratch and damage these kinds of window treatments.

Vacuum with the brush attachment.

This cleaning method is also good for easily removing dust and particles from blinds. Move the attachment horizontally across the slats. You can also clean them by swiping the vacuum arm up and down along vertical blinds.

Don’t:

Clean dust with water.

It may seem like a natural idea to wipe down blinds with soap and water, but this can actually make it harder to clean them. Moisture can cause particles to cling to the surface, and pooled water can cause spotting and discoloration. If you have heavier stains, use a cloth that’s lightly moistened with water to spot clean areas after they’ve been dusted.

Soak wooden blinds.

While you can wet wooden window treatments, you should never soak them. Submerging them in water will warp and discolor them to a point where they cannot be repaired.

Spray cleaner directly on surfaces.

Chemicals will also warp or scratch blinds when applied directly onto their surfaces. Spot-clean by spraying an all-purpose solution onto a clean cloth and wiping the pieces down with a little bit of force.
