Senior dental care is important not just to maintain healthy teeth and gums, but to lower the risk of age-related health issues such as heart disease and stroke. Dentists emphasize that gum inflammation increases the risk of these and other health issues. If you are older, review the following dental care tips to ensure your smile remains healthy and beautiful.

What Are Some Senior-Themed Oral Care Tips?

1. Drink Plenty of Water

It is not uncommon for seniors to take medication, including those that cause dry mouth as a side effect. If you deal with dry mouth issues because of medication or any other reason, increase your water intake to produce more saliva.

Low saliva levels allow food particles to remain stuck to the teeth instead of getting washed away, which increases the risk of tooth decay. It also helps to consume more water-heavy foods, such as watermelons and cucumbers.

2. Continue Brushing and Flossing

Routine brushing and flossing is not something that ends once you get older. Continue to brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day and floss once a day. Be gentle and use a soft-bristled implement, since aggressive brushing wears on tooth enamel.

If you have any mobility issues, consider using an electronic toothbrush and gum irrigator for easy cleaning. Should you have partial or full dentures, follow your dentist’s recommended cleaning practices, such as carefully brushing the dentures with a related cleanser and placing them in water overnight to avoid warping.

3. Take Calcium Supplements

Bone density decreases with age, but there is plenty you can do to maintain strong bone and therefore tooth health, such as engaging in strength training activities and taking calcium supplements. Calcium is an essential bone and tooth mineral that helps your teeth stay strong and reduces your osteoporosis risk.

4. Use Mouthwash

Depending on your current oral health, a dentist-recommended mouthwash might be necessary. An anti-tartar mouth rinse, for example, is ideal if you have had tartar buildup issues in the past. Should alcohol-based mouthwashes be too painful to use, look into alcohol-free versions that provide the same antiseptic or antibacterial benefits.
