Holiday stress, hazardous weather conditions, and extra drivers on the road all make driving during and after the holiday season more difficult. Winter accidents and auto collisions can happen to anyone, but you can greatly decrease these chances by being in full control of the vehicle. Follow these tips for safe and smart driving while on the road this post-holiday season.

How Can You Practice Safe Driving?

1. Plan Ahead

Be aware of weather conditions and which roads are prone to be problematic or congested. If needed, plan alternate routes. If you’re planning to drive long distances or are running errands, give yourself enough padding time to avoid rushing.

2. Watch Your Speed

Slowing down is one of the simplest ways to avoid an auto collision. The chances of a fatality in a car accident dramatically rise over even small increases in speed. Slowing down also allows you to monitor the road more clearly for obstructions. Avoid sudden braking whenever possible, as this can cause the vehicle to skid.

3. Drive Defensively

auto collisions

Maintain at least one car length’s distance from other vehicles, although a wider distance is more preferable during inclement weather. Allow impatient or angry drivers to pass you so that you can control the situation, and check intersections for oncoming traffic even if you have right of way.

4. Avoid Distractions

Practice being attentive and fully aware of the road. Avoid using your phone, or switch to hands-free mode when taking calls. If you're driving with children, plan activities or create a music playlist for them in advance to keep them relaxed, or ask another adult to monitor them while you focus on driving. When in doubt, pull over to the side if you can’t keep your attention fully to the road.

5. Service Your Car

Visit an auto technician for a full-service appointment to check your vehicle’s fluids and examine the engine and transmission for any issues. Have your tires checked and realigned or replaced if necessary. Your car’s battery should also be fully charged and replaced every three years.
