From cozy cabins and tasty dining options to theme parks and shopping, the Great Smoky Mountains holds unparalleled possibilities for tourists of all ages. But one of the greatest joys of the region is its natural beauty, and there’s no better way to experience the full majesty of the scenery than with a hike. Even if you’re not an experienced trailblazer, there are plenty of options to explore. Here are a few of the best hikes for beginners.

What Hiking Trails Should Beginners Try in the Smokies?

1. Gatlinburg Trail

This is an easy nature walk suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The Gatlinburg Trail starts at the Sugarlands Visitor Center. En route, you'll cross over the Little Pigeon River via a pedestrian footbridge, pass through breathtaking woodland, and view old cabin sites with foundations and chimneys still standing. Coming in at just under two miles one way, the trail ends on the outskirts of the city of Gatlinburg and is one of the few trails that is both pet- and bicycle-friendly.

2. Laurel Falls Trail

cabinThe Laurel Falls Trail is a 2.6-mile hike that beginners will enjoy. It makes for comfortable walking — the trail is paved — and it ends at the breathtaking Laurel Falls. Towering 80 feet in the air, the waterfall plummets down the mountain and has both upper and lower sections accessible to visitors. It takes about two hours total to complete this hike, so don't forget to bring water bottles.

3. Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail

The Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is the only wheelchair-accessible hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s designed with convenience and spectacular natural beauty in mind, and it winds gently through the forest along the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River. Clocking in at a brisk half-mile, it's ideal for first-timers. This hike is made even more enjoyable by a series of exhibits along the trail, each one offering information about the history and geography of the region.
