If you're vacationing in a beautiful cabin, the local trails offer opportunities for your family to explore and enjoy the area's best scenery. Kids enjoy hiking too, but they don't have the same stamina as adults and will get tired and bored. To make your trip a positive experience, here are a few ideas to make sure they're comfortable along the way.

How to Keep Kids Happy on a Hike

1. Prepare in Advance

First, research the trails in the area. Pick one that's easy to hike—ideally one that's flat or has only a gradual slope. Then pack your bags with plenty of water and snacks your kids will enjoy. Check the weather for that day so won't get caught in the rain and that it won't be unusually hot. Finally, make sure your children dress appropriately for the trip from the cabin, with comfortable, sturdy shoes, the right clothes for the weather, hats to keep their faces shaded, and sunscreen.

2. Plan to Rest

CabinYour kids will need to stop and rest more frequently than you. Start your hike early in the day and schedule extra time so you won't have to rush them. Try to take stops where there are fascinating plants, animals, and landscapes to look at to keep your kids entertained. Give out the food and water you brought along to keep them hydrated and energized.

3. Consider the Walk Back

If you wait until your kids start to get tired before you turn and head back, you're going to have exhausted, grumpy children and the hike back will take much longer. If your kids can hike an hour without problems, then you should only go out for about half an hour before you turn around. Set a timer on your watch or phone to remind yourself when you should turn back.
