Asphalt, also known as blacktop, is a manufactured mixture of crushed stone, gravel, sand, and liquid asphalt. You see it everywhere — roads, parking lots, and driveways are typically made with this material due to its longevity and affordability. When paving an area, you’ll need to decide whether binder or top is the right choice for your project. R&W Paving often gets this question from their Hilton, NY, clients, who must understand the pros and cons of each material before deciding which to use.

Asphalt Binder

Asphalt binder has a high concentration of the large crushed stones in its mixture. The stones are typically around 3/4 of an inch in diameter. The stones give the material a rough and porous appearance. The large stone is strong, which increases the amount of weight the asphalt can handle before giving way. Asphalt binder is what’s used for new roadway and parking lot projects in order to withstand the weight of heavy vehicles.

Asphalt Top

asphaltAsphalt top, on the other hand, commonly uses a 3/4” stone which gives it a smoother and more attractive appearance. Because it’s lacking the large stone, it can’t handle the same weight binder can. Asphalt top is given its name because it is often spread over the top of the thick binder layer to protect it, give it a smoother appearance, and help seal out moisture that would otherwise seep down through the binder. This material is a good option if you’re simply repaving an area or don’t expect to be driving heavy machinery over the area.

Both types of asphalt are fantastic options, and you’ll need to choose the material simply based on what you’re using it for.
