Driving safety is essential, especially during the winter. Not only do you need adequate auto insurance in case of a collision or slide-off, but you should always keep a winter emergency kit on hand. During a crisis, it might help keep you comfortable as you wait for roadside assistance. Here's a non-exhaustive list of some items to keep in your car, just in case.

What to Include in a Winter Emergency Kit

1. Food and Water

Keep food that won't spoil on hand to fill the belly if you and your kids find yourself stranded. Beef jerky, potted meat, energy bars, mixed peanuts, and trail mix are good selections.

In an emergency, you'll also need to stay hydrated, so add several plastic bottles of water to your emergency kit. On freezing days, keep them in the heated passenger compartment where they are less likely to freeze.

2. Jumper Cables

Cold weather can deplete a car battery quickly, so keep jumper cables with you in case your battery dies. By connecting your battery to that of another car, you can often get back on the road and start recharging your battery within minutes. Only use the cables if you're comfortable handling them and after reading the instructions thoroughly.

3. Blankets

When your car doesn't start, the passenger compartment can become very cold. Keep a few blankets on hand to help you stay warm. A space blanket—made of thin, heat-reflective materials—is particularly compact and lightweight. Its shiny surface is specifically designed to prevent bodily heat loss.

4. Sand or Cat Litter

If you're stuck in snow, you might find that even winter tires get little traction. Carry a 25-pound bag of sand or non-clumping cat litter to help. Poured on either side of the tires, these materials increase friction and give the treads something to grip onto.
