If you’re visiting the Hawaiian Islands, or haven’t made it to the beach lately, you may hear the term “snuba” for the first time. Are you wondering what it’s all about? If the term has peaked your interest, you’ll find the following facts useful. Here is a brief history of the unique sport known as snuba.

The History of Snuba: One of Today’s Most Unique Watersports

What Is It?

Snuba is a combination of snorkeling and scuba diving. It uses air from the surface and runs it through an underwater breathing system. Small rafts on the water’s surface equipped with hoses funnel water to the divers below the surface. Much like scuba diving, divers use fins, a mask, a harness and weight belt. They also have a diving regulator.

Who Created It?

snubaAir Force veteran Michael Stafford invented the sport in the late 80s. According to the official Snuba site, he patented it in 1990. Friends and family funded the project at first. It soon grew into one of today’s most popular international watersports. The sport has become a worldwide success.

How Can I Do It?

One of the best introductions to the sport is by taking a tour. A certified diver will explain the ins and outs you need to know. A brief introduction and safety demonstration is all it takes. Then, you'll be ready to experience firsthand the beauty of the open ocean.
