3. Massive & Heavy
An adult Honu can grow up to 5 feet, with the carapace of their shell measuring about 40 inches in length. As for their weight, they’re usually around 200 to 500 lbs., but they can get as heavy as 700 lbs.!
4. Surprisingly Speedy When Spooked
If you want to swim with turtles for a while, always exercise caution and try not to scare them. Generally, they swim at a pace that’s about 1.5 to 2 mph; however, when frightened, they can swim as fast as 20 to 35 mph!
5. Endangered Species
Sadly, due to their main predators being sharks, as well as factors like poaching, egg harvesting, incidental and accidental captures by fisheries, habitat destruction, and pollution, green sea turtles are currently classified as an endangered species.
6. Always Return Home
When it comes time for them to lay their eggs, female Honu will make their nest at the same beach on which they were born. This is known as natal homing.
