What to Know If You Want to Swim With Turtles
Many tourists who visit Oahu want to snorkel in the warm Pacific waters so that they can see marine life up close. Also known as honu in Hawaiian, a green sea turtle can weigh up to 700 lbs. and are one of the oldest species around. However, before you jump into the ocean and swim with turtles, there are a few critical facts you should know.
A Guide to Swimming With Honu
When to Visit
Unlike other marine life, honu can be found around Oahu year-round. However, the probability of their appearance can be affected by wave size. The bigger the wave, the less likely they’ll show up as the strong swells make it difficult for them to swim closer to shore. Large waves are more common in the winter, but honu have shown up occasionally. However, if you want to secure an opportunity to swim with turtles, the other seasons are a safer bet.
Where to Go
People have had consistent success seeing turtles on Oahu’s west side. In particular, Ko Olina Beach has a lagoon that green sea turtles love to frequent. The North Shore is also a popular spot for them, especially Haleiwa and Laniakea Beach.
What to Be Mindful Of
Honu are friendly enough that you can get close and swim nearby, but Hawaii’s Division of Aquatic Resources recommend you should always leave a buffer zone of at least 10 feet. Turtles might swim away to mitigate the stress of an encounter, and if they do, give them space and don’t chase them.
Additionally, they can be easy to scare and can swim as fast as 35 mph to get away. If they linger and don't notice you immediately, don't take it as an invitation to get closer. Never touch them. They’re classified as an endangered species, and direct contact can compromise their health as well as your own.
